The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023 was released on September 27, 2023. The GII ranks countries based on how innovative they are. This year's report assessed the innovation performance of 132 economies.
Switzerland topped the GII 2023 for the 11th consecutive year. Sweden and the United States came in second and third, respectively. The top 10 economies in the GII 2023 are all developed economies, with the exception of China, which ranked 11th.
India retained its 40th rank from the previous year. This makes India the upper-middle-income country with the highest innovation ranking. However, India's innovation performance still lags behind many developed and other upper-middle-income countries. The GII 2023 found that global innovation growth has slowed down in recent years. This is likely due to a number of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the global economic slowdown.
Despite the slowdown in global innovation growth, the GII 2023 also found that innovation is increasingly concentrated in a few countries and regions. The top 10 economies in the GII 2023 account for over half of all global research and development spending.
To improve its innovation performance, India needs to focus on a number of areas, including:
- Creating a more supportive environment for innovation, including through policies that promote entrepreneurship, risk-taking, and investment in research and development.
- Investing in education and research, particularly in STEM fields.
- Improving infrastructure, such as broadband internet access and transportation networks.
- Encouraging public-private partnerships in innovation.
The Indian government has taken a number of steps in recent years to promote innovation, such as the launch of the StartUp India program and the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan initiative. However, more needs to be done to create a more supportive environment for innovation and to increase investment in education and research.
How India can improve its innovation performance
In addition to the areas mentioned above, India can also improve its innovation performance by:
- Focusing on innovation in emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things.
- Promoting collaboration between academia and industry in innovation.
- Supporting the development of science and technology parks.
- Creating a more inclusive innovation ecosystem that allows women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups to participate fully.
By taking these steps, India can boost its innovation performance and become a global leader in innovation.
